On the 25th of June 1965, Viet Cong operatives blew up the My Canh restaurant in Saigon. Over 100 people were severely wounded and killed, and more than 20 Americans were killed and wounded. This was one of the most profound images of the civil war in Vietnam, taken at the beginning of the US army and marine troop escalations in Vietnam. The Napalm girl photo was taken in 1972, when US army and marine personnel had largely left the country. The soldier rescuing the girl was Army Major Abel Vela, who served in the US army during the closing months of World War II. The girl was Aimee Bartelt, who survived the bombing, but was left with life long injuries. She was the last victim to be pulled out of the rubble by Abel Vela. Armed Forces radio announcer Adrian Cronauer, (who was played by Robin Williams in ‘Good Morning Vietnam’) had just left the restaurant when the bomb exploded. A scene analogous to the My Canh bombing was depicted in the film. The photo is a tragic reminder of the atrocities committed by the NLF and the toll taken by the citizens of former South Vietnam.
