Ubisoft: Glitchers will be punished

Things have not gone very well for The Division ever since last week’s big update. Wiped characters, broken matchmaking, exploits and more: this first major content update has gone a long way towards erasing the positive memory associated with the game’s relatively stable launch. Among the biggest problems we’ve got going right now concerns an exploit in “Falcon Lost,” the game’s endgame incursion, launched alongside the update. People have found a way to clip through the incursion, essentially getting the rewards without really moving through the thing, giving them a huge accelerant towards all that endgame gear. That’s a balance issue, obviously, and while Ubisoft has yet to deactivate the thing, they’re working on fixing it and they’re warning people off of using it:

“We are working on fixing the exploit. Obviously it is against our Code of Conduct and the team is looking into what can be done in terms of punishment for those who have exploited,” a community manager said in the forums.

Here’s the thing, though: as Shacknews points out, other cheaters have been met with three day bans for their sins, with no further consequences. So if Ubisoft decides to give people who use this exploit similar treatment, it could still be well worth your while to farm the thing for now, take your slap on the wrist and come out on the other side with all sorts of high end gear. It’s not a great situation all around: more severe punishments might seem out of line for something that is technically the developer’s fault, and less severe punishments wouldn’t do anything to fix the game’s burgeoning balance problem. And balance is a huge deal when you consider that The Dark Zone is meant to serve as an endgame activity as well: teams of high gear players wreaking havoc is bad news for everyone but them.

It’s a bad moment for The Division. The first major update after launch is absolutely crucial for an MMO, and this has not gone very well. The biggest problem, as with the perpetual rebalancing of Phoenix Credits, is that these problems don’t go away once the bug is fixed. If the developer can’t wrestle the balance back to something that makes sense for everyone, it could take months to recover from these problems.
