When you kick an AFK from the squad and their slot does not “free up” till they join another squad.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes – noticed and experienced, especially if a sniper is kicked as that is most frequent kicking. However, if Spotter (as last member of the squad) leaves the squad as well, that squad ceases to exist. So if he creates new squad, even if with the same name/letter, brand new sniper spot is free to take in it. Whoever is kicked though, is not getting experience points to the class he was kicked from, but he gets EXP only to rifleman class instead (despite sniper rifle or whatever kit still in kicked players hand).

Btw., this way theoretically whole team could get a sniper rifle (or any other kit) for 1 life, just until they die… if this bug would be used systematically.

I took a sniper spot a few days ago and got kicked go figure. The new sniper was automatically a rifle man till I died. So I don’t think you can flood the map anymore.

Is there a way to free up a squad spot for an afk or are we just screwed?

hmm good point, i would suggest calling the help of a admin in this case

I am saying it, just read more carefully. If you want to become a sniper, ask spotter to cancel (leave) the squad and make a new one. You can get sniper spot straight away despite the kicked guy from old squad is still alive and with sniper rifle. I have been doing it this way since I found out and it works. Never needed admin because of it.
