As some of you know, because i rarely forget to mention that i use Linux, i wanted to make a quick comparison of the performance between windows and Linux, because i have never really measured the performance, it was just working well on both.
Some background:
I run Linux full time on my PC, for the majority of my life, mostly because i am a huge believer in Open Source software, and also because my work revolves around Linux.
However i was also dual booting Windows my whole life, because the games i was playing were not working on Linux. Well as time progressed, and Linux became more popular because of the Steam deck, the games were slowly starting to work better and better on Linux, to the point that there is almost no distinction in many single player games. But i was still using Windows for games that i played, because most of the Multiplayer games weren’t working on Linux – at least not the ones i was playing, which were PUBG and Battlefield 6, mainly because of their Anti-cheat solutions which were not able to work on Linux. But then when PUBG went to shit, and my (almost) 2500 hours put in to the game with it, i decided to switch to Hell let loose. I’ve owned this game for years beforehand, but i just didn’t play it because 1. my friend group didn’t like the game and 2. It was boring at times to play alone with random squads every day.
But then all of that changed when i found out about PBS and your clan – which i immediately liked, and me being a person to find a game which i like and stick to that game, i don’t see myself playing anything else.
And to my surprise, Hell let loose works on Linux! Which made me happy, because i didn’t need to reboot my PC to windows after every work day just to play.
I tried to play on Linux, and the game seemed smoother – except for the initial entry to the server, because Linux has to cache the map textures, so the game will run at 10-15 FPS until that process finishes. After that it’s smooth sailing.
I will say, that i do have an all AMD system, which most of the gamers don’t have, but i do have it exactly because of Linux – NVidia Graphics cards work on Linux, but with proprietary drivers. I cannot vouch for their performance to be the same as mine.
My PC Specs are:
GPU: AMD Radeon 7900 XT 20 GB
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X AM4
RAM: 128GB Kingston 3200Mhz – four lane setup
Display: Dell Alienware AW2523HF 360Hz
Storage: 2tb Samsung Evo M.2 SSDSo yeah it is pretty beefy.
NOW LETS GET INTO THE NUMBERS!
Windows benchmarking run:
Average framerate : 185.5 FPS
Maximum framerate : 200.1 FPS
1% low framerate : 137.8 FPS
0.1% low framerate : 10.8 FPSLINUX Benchmarking run:
Average framerate : 204.00 FPS
Maximum framerate : 293.27 FPS
1% low framerate : 154.70 FPS
0.1% low framerate : 129.59 FPSCrazy numbers, right?
I’ve also recorded my benchmarking sessions – you can’t really see the difference there because the FPS is already high, and i have to preface that it is NOT this high in public matches when there is other players involved, but it gives you some idea about what’s going on.
Link to the videoAlso some notes for anyone that maybe already runs it on linux:
I am running CachyOS, with Hyprland WM. I also have gamemode running, and
games are running using Proton-GE.Some rando information to make it consistent:
Linux recording was done with GPU Screen recorder – which is a recorder similar to Nvidia’s shadowplay. The benchmark data was done with MangoHud.Windows recording was done with Radeon software, and benchmark data was done with MSI afterburner.
This was a long wall of text, but if you made it to the end, thanks. 🙂
