Here are some tips that dig a little deeper in the SL-Role (VC and US) of RS2 if you’re new to the game or usually play as a private.
Create a squad:
After a match startet you can choose your class which you want to play with. Some classes make no sense to play as them if you want to be a squad leader:
Sniper/Marksman as US/USMC/Aussie/ARVN: as a sniper your job is to operate from afar, have an eye on enemy moving and cover friendly troops. Your squadmembers spawn on you as a member of the southern forces and the main troops should always stay near the objectives or cover their flanks.
Radioman as US/USMC/Aussie/ARVN: As a radioman your job is to stay near the commander as his mobile radio. Same problem here as with the sniper: You will often be too far away from the objectives to let your squadmembers build up a good supply line for advancing/defending friendly forces. Exception: The commander already has a radioman that stays with him.
To create a squad click on the “+” on the left side of an open squad. After that the “+” will change into a rectangle with an arrow inside and now teammates can join your squad. Your name will appear at the top of the squad which means that you’re the SL of this squad. You can also rename your squad if you click on the little pen, lock your squad for joining (lockpit symbol) and invite players to your squad when you click on the symbol with the 3 little heads.
Your job:
As a good SL you should avoid getting in open combat with the enemy. Your main job is to create good spawn points for your squad, set marks for your commander, find the best flanking routes, always have an eye on the map and communicate with your commander and squad to create a strategy to attack or defend an objective.
- always use the flanks: almost every objective on every map is designed to withstand a frontal attack. If you attack an objective use your map to decide which is the best flanking route and let your squad mates know where to go
- never be the first man of an attack or defend line of your squad (as southern forces you’re the spawn point and its absolutely necessary that you stay alive to avoid your squad from being cut off from reinforcements)
- place your tunnels in “safe” and strategic spots (northern forces): near the objectives or on spots where you and your squad can cut off enemy supply lines. Sometimes it can be seen, that SL’s place their tunnels next to the hard spawn/s which obviously makes no sense.
- use traps even as attackers (northern forces): for example: if you place a tunnel behind enemy lines to attack from behind or cut off enemy reinforcements, cover it with non-explosive traps right beside it (Punji-traps) and explosive traps further away from it. Let at least one squadmate defend the tunnel to avoid getting it destroyed by the enemy
- always have a look for good spots where to put a new tunnel (northern forces): always adjust the tunnel to the current situation (your map is your best friend)
- place your marks in strategic points: mostly its the best thing to place it behind the objectives where the reinforcements of the enemy drop in. Watch the map to see where the other SL’s place their marks and adjust your mark if your mark is at the same spot as an already existing mark
- don’t stack soldiers: let your squad spread out and build lines to defend/attack. One single grenade can wipe out your whole squad in the worst case if you are all located in the same spot
- tunnel rats are deadly as a team (southern forces): before you enter a tunnel as the southern forces, make sure your squadmates spawned on you (squadmates can’t spawn on you when you’re in a tunnel system besides from a few exceptions). Your main weapons can’t be used in these tunnels so advancing it with a squad full of grunts makes no sense, since you will be the only one with a sidearm. Advancing a tunnel with a full squad: 2 privates front, SL, private to cover the SL, 2 privates to cover the back
- get knowledge of the maps: try to get to know the maps and their best routes/spots to defend/attack. If you’re playing on a map which you don’t know yet, its sometimes better to give the SL to a squadmate that knows the map – communication is as always key 🙂
- try to be a squad with diverse roles: every role has a job to fulfill and to operate as an effective squad. You have to make sure to use all the advantages of each role: Recon to cover you with smoke, marksman/mg to suppress enemy fire/cover your squad, combat engineer/sapper to get in touch in the first line of cqc etc. A squad with too many same roles is never as effective than one with many different roles
- don’t leave all the thinking to the commander: let him know about observed enemy movement, good spots to lead the attack/defend and give him tips if necessary
These are the most important things to do as an effective SL in my opinion but I’m convinced there are a lot of things to do and that I forgot to put in this list. So please let us know if you can think of more tips to be a good SL 🙂

I only play SL on US, but heed the words from Valk above. Use your SL position as a mobile spawn point. Get ure ass near a cap zone and get ure fecking head down ! Obviously mark arty points but chill and let your mates spawn up. You can still get your cap points but wait till the cap is half taken, generally by then its safe to rush in.
Its better to be a great spawn for 5 team mates than a dead cap-rusher who helps no-one.
PBS Tarts 4ever! 😛
