US airforce pilot Dewey Wayne Waddell, held prisoner in North Vietnam 1967. Major Dewey Wayne Waddell was shot down by antiaircraft artillery in his F-105 thunderchief whilst attacking a key railroad yard over North Vietnam on the 5th of July 1967.

This photo was taken interestingly by a DDR war correspondent, possible east german link to soviet russia perhaps? The photo was purely for propaganda purpose, with emphasis on the placement of the small un-uniformed woman escorting him. Given the fact Wayne was shot over North Vietnam, it is almost certain that North Vietnamese army regulars captured him. The use of the tiny peasant woman in the shot is in my opinion, an attempt to further play on the stereotype that the Communist Vietnamese forces consisted of peasants and other people of the land.  As opposed to the reality, where an increasing number of Communist forces were well drilled, trained, uniformed professional North Vietnamese regulars equipped with the latest Soviet equipment and weaponry. Again it is key to point out that South Vietnam was not conquered by Black Pajamaed VC peasants armed with antiquated rifles, but rather a well trained conventional fighting force consisting of a professional army equipped with Main Battle tanks, heavy artillery pieces and cutting edge AA firepower.
