The game mode meshes together both conquest and rush in a tug of war-style mode. Aside from showing off some of the new Rupture map, the video may have also included details on a new Legendary weapon coming to Battlefield 1.
There are already two existing legendary weapons in Battlefield 1, the Bartek Bludgeon and the Sawtooth Knife. These melee weapons are unlocked by collecting puzzle pieces from battlepacks in the game.
In the Frontlines trailer, there’s a moment where we can spot a large saber in a loadout for the Scout class. Of course, the only current class in Battlefield 1 with access to a saber or sword weapon is the cavalry, so the fact it’s available to the scout means it’s a new weapon.
Interestingly, the weapon’s icon doesn’t match the existing icon for the cavalry saber, either. The saber depicted in Battlefield 1 is similar to the Pattern 1796 light cavalry saber, commonly used by the British and Prussians in the 1800s. The one shown in the Frontlines video includes a more distinguished handguard, and appears very similar to French 1822 light cavalry saber. This weapon was actually used during World War I.
As Battlefield 1 doesn’t have a large saber-style weapon for infantry, it would make sense that if one is to be added to the game with the upcoming French DLC, that it would be a French weapon.
Since it wasn’t included with the announcement of the regular melee weapons like the nail knife, trench fleur, and cogwheel club, it’s highly likely this new melee weapon is a unique puzzle piece item.
We don’t know any more details about the new weapon, but going ham on enemies with the cavalry saber on foot makes it one of the more enjoyable melee weapons in Battlefield 1.
