Limited details are available, but for “In the Name of the Tsar†players will “enter the war’s biggest front with the Russian army and fight in snow-covered ravines and a freezing archipelago in 4 new maps.â€
A press release from DICE confirms the Russian expansion’s maps are based on the Brusilov Offensive, Operation Albion, and the battles in the Lupkow Pass.
Art for In the Name of the Tsar shows a hussar armed with a lance. Lances were all but obsolete in WWI, but were still employed by the Imperial Russian Army.
As for the other two DLCs, Turning Tides appears based on amphibious combat. Battlefield 1’s website is teasing at least two maps: One is centered around the beaches of Gallipoli, and the other lets players participate in the daredevil Zeebrugge Raid.
The Zeebrugge Raid is one the most interesting battles in WWI – The British Royal navy attempted to block the German-held port in 1918 in an effort to cripple submarine operations. They did this by landing Royal Marines to neutralize German gun batteries and purposefully sinking ships at the port entrance. It’s effectiveness remains a bit of a debate, but there’s no denying the bravery it took to pull off the raid.
In the promotional image, I am absolutely thrilled to say DICE nailed the map setting and layout for the Zeebrugge Raid. I can even tell you the name of this ship is the HMS Vindictive. Historically, the old cruiser was rearmed with flamethrowers and other close range weapons before the raid, so it will be interesting to see if there are new stationary weapons in the expansion.
A couple other things to note, the raid took place in the early morning hours, and it looks like this map takes place at night. The image also likely confirms the inclusion of a new aircraft in the DLC: a seaplane. A press release from DICE also confirms a new naval vessel, the destroyer, and a new “coastal class airship,†that might be a new take on a familiar behemoth.
For the “Apocalypse†DLC, DICE says players will go over the top in some of the most infamous battles of WW1. There are no specific details about the maps, but the developer says soldiers will get their hands on “brutal tools and unique weapons born out of desperation and deadlock.â€
We may be looking at very close-quarters maps, or even underground scenarios, as DICE states, “Never before have the nightmarish horrors of the Great War been closer as you descend into hell. Prepare to enter the Apocalypse.â€
Hearing those words brings to mind the exploits of the diggers in WWI, the Battle of Messines, and the Drachenhoelle at Chemin des Dames during the Nivelle Offensive. All of that’s speculation, but the Drachenhoelle would be an amazing location for a Battlefield 1 map.
French and German soldiers fought each other inside the sprawling cave system, creating fortified emplacements, sniper positions, barracks, first aid stations, and even a cemetery.
There’s no word on release dates for any of the downloadable content, but if you pick up Battlefield 1’s Premium pass, it’s all included and gives you a two week head start before those who purchase the DLC separately.
