The Vietnam War is here, hidden beneath the crushed limestone and the canopy of the forest lies an invisible enemy. You cannot walk its trails alone or visit one of the caves without risking been blown to bits. Phong Nha was the most heavily bombed site in Vietnam during the war. It is estimated that 19.3 million bombs were dropped by the US alone, amounting to 14 million tons of ordinances, near three times the amount used by the Allies in the whole of the Second World War. At least one third of these bombs never explode and are still here, waiting.
