A Blog of my Roadtrip to Normandy and Dunkirk
Hey guys, I am making this Blog for all of those interested in my Roadtrip through France. (and belgium, but that was not for historical purposes)</p>
We went to Sainte-Mere-Eglise, Sainte-Marie-Du-Mond, Carentan, Omaha Beach,Utah Beach and Dunkirk. The thing with Normandy is that every little town and sometimes every little road has something to see, whether thats a Museum, Landsmarks or Monuments. There is just SO MUCH to see.
Unfortunately we picked a “bad” time since a lot of the Museums closed a week beforehand, probably due to it being off-season. But as i said before there is SO MUCH to see, that we did not have trouble at all finding something interesting. Even if everything is opened you would need A LOT of time to see everything. A lot of people come back multiple times. During the period of D-Day there is also a lot more to do and the region basically comes back to life. But being there in off-season was very nice as well, because all the places were pretty much empty so you could really get a feeling of how it was back then and be left to your mind and imagination.
No matter where you were, reading the stories of soldiers and happenings at the respective locations and seeing the location in front of you is really unreal.. it gives you goosebumps.
As we drove from Brugge towards Sainte-Mere-Eglise (where our Hotel was) we visited Utah Beach and Sainte-Marie-Du-Mont. Just a disclaimer, i did not see everything everywhere because it is very time consuming. So if i missed something that is why. But i will share what i saw. A lot of the locations People will remember from different Series, Movies and Games.
P.S The weather was insanely shitty, it rained every day and at dunkirk the wind and rain was so bad that we left very early.
Here is a Picture from the Church in Sainte-Marie-Du-Mont, which HLL Players will definetly recognize:
Utah Beach
After we Briefly saw what Sainte-Marie-Du-Mont had to offer, we went towards Utah Beach. The Weather then was very good. The Museum was closed unfortunately, But we still got to see a LOT. I even made a then/before picture, which is very hard to do because of course not everyting is identical nowadays. Especially at Omaha Beach, a lot has changed due to the Erosion of the Cliffs.
Utah Beach then
Utah Beach Now
The next Pictures are just to give you an impression of what it looked like, also including the obligatory Tourism “i was here” Picture!
Sainte-Mere-Eglise
After we had finished taking in Utah Beach, we headed for our Hotel at Sainte-Mere-Eglise and to see what the town had to offer. It is a very quite and idyllic town. Very homely and beautifull. Because it is so, i had to learn a bit of french, since 90 percent of the inhabitants do not speak english, but that was fine. There are always ways to communicate, especially in modern times like we live in.
Our hotel was 50 Meters from the town center, where the Church is Located. The Church also appears in lots of movies and games, recognized by the paratrooper hanging from the top of the Church.
On the Town Center they have a small Market every Thursday as well, where you can get lots of delicious local Cheese, Fish and Sausages!
There are also 2 Stores very close to the Town Center that sell lots of militairy gear and even very cool Lego Models of f.e WW2 Tanks. For some things you even get Discounts when it is the off-season.
We grabbed something to eat and went to sleep, heading for the D-Day Experience Museum the next day.
D-Day Experience
After googling a bit to find museums that were still open, we came across the D-Day Experience museum, located 20 minutes drive outside of Sainte-Mere-Eglise.
And boy-oh-boy was this a great experience. After ending our visit here i dont think any other Museum could outdo this one! a real must see if you ever visit!
i also advise renting a car or taking your own car with you, or else it is even harder to get around as everything is VERY rural.
You can get tickets here for visiting the museum, taking part in the Flight Simulator and also to watch a movie about D-Day itself. We chose to do the Flight Simulator and to visit the museum.
The Flight Simulator (of a C-47 Skyplane transporting Paratroopers towards, and over normandy) was truly an experience that i recommend to everyone. i had a tear in my eye and a smile on my face at the same time, a very weird but astonishing moment. They even did a real Briefing before the Simulator started!
My Girlfriend made a Video of a Small Period of it, which you can find on my Youtube Channel:
The Museum itself was very very interesting and had A LOT of unique Items. Some of them being things you would never think of, like for example a Roster List of Attendance for Officers. Very cool! Here are some pictures of the museum:
An explanation of why Purple Heart Lane was named Purple Heart Lane, They had a video of him describing the event itself as well. And a recreation of what it looked like.
More Pictures:
There was A LOT more, but i dont want to spoil the whole Museum for you guys. If you want something to put on your bucket list, this Museum is the thing!!!
They are still putting up more Items, even today. Some Displays were still in progress.
(carentan and Omaha Beach and Dunkirk coming soon)

Looks like you’ve had a great trip. Hope that these memories stay with you for the rest of your life. It’s always been a goal of mine to see Normandy and how the allies invaded the axies and what it would’ve been like to be a scared 18 year old ready to charge the beach. Looking forward to seeing more!
