I was lucky enough to have the time to Tour northern France a few years ago. Did all of the beaches, Carentan, St Mere Eglise, Brecourt, it was excellent. I based myself in Caen, which was close enough for everything.

The one event that is overlooked generally and was the most impressive thing I saw was Pegasus Bridge. When the British are added to HLL, this MUST  be a map. The museum there is awesome. If you do go to northern France for a battlefield tour or to visit the sites yourselves, Pegasus Bridge must be on the agenda.
