Hey Somerville,
I can say that playing tanks in HLL is more complex and tricky than you first think. Maybe not to compare with games like Post Scriptum but a certain level of difficulty is already there.
Still, it’s not too difficult to learn how to drive, shoot, or taunt.
To drive:
All of the tanks in the game except the recon vehicles are stick shift operated, meaning that you have to control the switching of gears of the tank as your speed changes. Typically, the lower gears turn quickly and the higher gears move the tank faster. If you switch gears too fast you can stall the tank and get stuck at a slow speed even if you switch to higher gears. – Tank Bible
So wait until your speedo hits 20 RPM and then shift up a gear.
When you react to threats and want to turn your Tank you need dropping down to 1st gear from 4th gear since 1st gear has the fastest turn speed for most Tanks.
It is also important to know the seating position in the tank and the size of your tank. The driver’s viewport is on the left hand side of the tank, not the middle nor the right side.

There are also a few techniques such as “kiting”. As a tank, you hide behind a wall, house, etc., and pull out of cover to attack an enemy tank (provided you know its position). The turret is aligned laterally. if the tank takes damage the driver will switch back and go back into cover so the crew can repair the tank.

If you are interested in much more advanced information I can recommend TheLine’s Tank Bible. “https://theline.gg/tankbible”
As a spotter or as a tank commander you have the responsibility to navigate the tank safely, spot enemies, find hiding places and much more.
As a tank commander, always ask the infantry for tank markings. There are a lot of cooperating people who can give you the position of enemy tanks. Watch out for grenade hits. keep your ears open and try to locate tanks based on sounds. If you hear a tank shooting, with a little practice you can spot it fairly accurately.
Stick to friendly infantry. Most of the time you die from enemy AT’s anyway, sometimes even when you’re surrounded by friendly forces…
I realize that there is so much to write. I mean there are so many tricks you can learn too.
Practice is still best. Just check out our discord and stick together with people asking for a tank crew. These are often located in the Tank SQ 15-20 channel.
