Hey
Any tips to get better at tanking, i can’t seem to get the hang of driving or spotting. Shootings relatively straightforward but cant come to grips with the other 2. Any pointers would be helpful. In situations under fire i can never manoeuvre the tank quickly enough nor find the target hitting us when spotting.
Cheers

https://theline.gg/tankbible/#2.10 this is a really in depth tank guide if u´r interested. Otherwise tanking is a lot about information and positioning as well as knowing some of the weak spots. When u know where enemy tanks are u can easily position urself somewhere where its hard for them to see you, means whenever u shot a few shots and killed something it´s smart to change positions. When u get good pings and know what you can shoot through u can even kill tanks behid hedges that u don´t see urself, or in some cases the spotter/commander can leave the tank to ping a target that´s not directly in line of sight.
There´s a ton you can do in tanks, a lot to learn and a lot of different play styles as well. You decide what´s your main target and how u wanna engage it. Also always keep an eye on the map. Which outposts/garrisons are hot? Where are people dying? And where are they looking? All this can give u info about enemy positions and helps your decision making.
In the end u just need to play and gain experience. After a while u get a pretty good feeling for timing and movements or gamesense how would call it in other games.
Hope i got some useful info for you. Have fun and see you in game.

Disclaimer: By no means an expert.
Firstly, practice and time. That goes without saying. Watch youtube tutorials, build your basic knowledge of the tanks. The tank bible(https://theline.gg/tankbible) is amazing.
Secondly, try to get into a full squad. I really am not a fan of 2 man tank crews, or even solo. But, when you get into a squad and all know and understand your roles you will find it to be one of the most intense tanking experiences in gaming.
For spotting, 90% of the battle is using command chat. You need good squads to help you spot enemy tanks. Premark them, use your map, try to know roughly where they will be. Then you can think, “if I was a tiger tank and I knew that we were coming, where would I hide?”
When you do spot, ping and mark. But keep your head on a swivel, you don’t need to be fully zoomed in on one AT guy, because what about the guy behind you with a satchel? Only the spotter has such great visibility. The driver can always see front(can’t zoom of course), the turret turns slowly so they can’t be much help behind. When I play spotter, once I ping a target for the gunner I am looking elsewhere. I can always come back to check if that target is no longer a threat etc. Likewise vs tanks, try to help the gunner, call if the shots are low/high. Ping the weak spots on the tanks. Again the Tank bible will really help.
As a driver, its just practice and game knowledge. Watch videos, I like Fresh Baked Goods, (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheFreshBakedGoods/videos) watch those. Learn what you can drive through and you can’t. Think and try “odd” routes. Use your knowledge to turn the tanks to present the worst shot to your enemy. If you are in a Tiger/Jumbo, then only let them shoot you in the front or of course preferably not at all.
Above all it really is just practice, try to get into a squad with a few more experienced tankers(PBS has plenty!) and learn from them, ask and they will be sure to help out.
Hopefully some of this and the linked resources you will find somewhat useful, and if you ever see me asking for a tanking buddy feel free to come join!

Hey Somerville,
I can say that playing tanks in HLL is more complex and tricky than you first think. Maybe not to compare with games like Post Scriptum but a certain level of difficulty is already there.
Still, it’s not too difficult to learn how to drive, shoot, or taunt.
To drive:
All of the tanks in the game except the recon vehicles are stick shift operated, meaning that you have to control the switching of gears of the tank as your speed changes. Typically, the lower gears turn quickly and the higher gears move the tank faster. If you switch gears too fast you can stall the tank and get stuck at a slow speed even if you switch to higher gears. – Tank Bible
So wait until your speedo hits 20 RPM and then shift up a gear.
When you react to threats and want to turn your Tank you need dropping down to 1st gear from 4th gear since 1st gear has the fastest turn speed for most Tanks.
It is also important to know the seating position in the tank and the size of your tank. The driver’s viewport is on the left hand side of the tank, not the middle nor the right side.
Â
There are also a few techniques such as “kiting”. As a tank, you hide behind a wall, house, etc., and pull out of cover to attack an enemy tank (provided you know its position). The turret is aligned laterally. if the tank takes damage the driver will switch back and go back into cover so the crew can repair the tank.If you are interested in much more advanced information I can recommend TheLine’s Tank Bible. “https://theline.gg/tankbible”
As a spotter or as a tank commander you have the responsibility to navigate the tank safely, spot enemies, find hiding places and much more.
As a tank commander, always ask the infantry for tank markings. There are a lot of cooperating people who can give you the position of enemy tanks. Watch out for grenade hits. keep your ears open and try to locate tanks based on sounds. If you hear a tank shooting, with a little practice you can spot it fairly accurately.
Stick to friendly infantry. Most of the time you die from enemy AT’s anyway, sometimes even when you’re surrounded by friendly forces…
I realize that there is so much to write. I mean there are so many tricks you can learn too.
Practice is still best. Just check out our discord and stick together with people asking for a tank crew. These are often located in the Tank SQ 15-20 channel.
Â~Cheers

I have many questions about tanking in HLL. I usually am not bold enough to attempt to load in as a crew man but I tried it once and missed my ride, I guess you can’t spawn onto the tank? Additionally, if the tank and crew are taken out, the commander determines if and where (at headquarters) they will get a replacement tank otherwise they just run around with a pistol? Questions?

Correct, you cannot spawn onto the tank. If you join mid-game or if the tank is already mobile, you’ll have to coordinate with your tank crew on where to pick you up. Just ask – usually they will divert to a garrison to come pick you up.
Aside from the automatic spawns of tanks, the commander has the ability to place a tank at either of the 3 HQs; dependent on fuel resources. Most of the time, you won’t be running around with pistols – if ever.

I have started to use the role tank driving more and more as its a totally different side of the game..
When driving I give extra room to the left of the tank as I think the drivers position is on the right, well I haven’t hit anything yet lol..
You can go up the gears quite fast.
If ordered to move while in combat use 1 or 2nd gear to give the gunner chance to hit anything, when stopping face the armour (front of the tank) towards the combat area or enemy tank.
Try to think about using buildings to shield a side of the tank.
The driver has a machine gun aswell but no sights so only shoot it of you see the enemy as it has limited ammo.
To to pick terrain when stopping that will allow the gunner to have vertical adjustment to see and hit target.
You can go through most fences and some hedges even some parts of buildings that have been destroyed.
It’s fun playing driver and you have the responsibility to face the armour towards the enemy to prolong your squads life, its easy to get introuble in a tank and supporting the infantry if done correctly can help other squads no end

The driver isn’t the gunner, but if you are keeping the frontal Armour toward the target, the gun should, maybe, be pointed forward as well? Is there a limit to how far the turret can turn, and can the turret turn faster than the tank itself? These questions are coming from someone with little or no HLL tank experience. I saw somewhere that the gun should be no more than 15 degrees right or left of centerline OR is that just for transit?

This depends on how good you know youre crew. When i’m gunner, i pick myself targets, depends always on used ammunition, bigger threat, etc.
But i listen to the most experienced HLL Tanker in the tank (usually commander). I had it often that the commander takes the driver’s seat and completely moves the tank and gives orders like (gun at 12, or dont move the gun past 11 and 1, or gun at 3 (as he pushes forward)). So as you can see it depends on the tank crew/commander, and it would help to have a bit tanking experience even from other games. I’m, as an veteran RB/SIM WT player must admit, that i’ll not become friends with HLL’s tank weakspots. But it is very good for understanding how tanks mobility/aim/etc behave.
But for basic knowledge, the turret can traverse fully around, but the turret is slower than turning the tank in this game. So it really depends of your crew, on the situation and the expectations of you and your crew on how to advance the enemy in an specific situation. I had a few situations, where AT Inf destroyed our engine and i had to turn the turret around to be able to prevent the destruction of the tank, while the driver hopped out for repairs. So it is really depending on the situation and crew.
Oh, before i forget, talk in the beginning of the match with your squad, what youre using as main communication spotting mechanic. We’re always taking the clockwise system to designate to the gunner where the enemy is, and for an preciser callout afterwards we’re calling the exact callout out of the 360°. Sometimes gunners get confused with the ° callout and have to think ad look down where to traverse the turret, but when you’re facing an enemy tank, most of the time an callout like ‘2 o’clock’ is more than enough, because of the silhouette of the tank 🙂
And it is never bad to take initiative in your own hands, just communicate and tell your mates, what youre about to do / what youre planning to do 🙂
