I hate artillery

I guess that’s the infantryman’s lot – to hate artillery. Pleased when you hear it pounding the s**t out of the enemy, but hating every moment of it when the tables are turned.

As far as the game goes, the effect artillery can have on troops is amazing. But that it one of the reasons I dislike it so much. One player can have a hugely disproportionate effect on the game. Sure, the opposing side has artillery too and there are two teams of snipers who are supposedly zeroing in on the enemy artillery position in order order to take out the gunners but I just find the whole idea of tying up players like this a rather disappointing use of time in a game. No doubt others will disagree.

So, what to do about it? I just saw a snippet of game play from Post Scriptum, where the squad had to deal with a mortar team. I would much rather HLL introduced a couple of Mortar Squads, with limited ammo, to replace the three artillery guns that both teams start with.

So what do the sniper teams do? Well, rove around behind the lines taking down garrisons and nodes. I guess some teams do that now, but all to often I see snipers in the midst of the frontal assault, racking up kills with their optical sights.

Alternatively, you could keep the guns, but make them more difficult to use. Make them less accurate, more costly, and require a team member to act as spotter. If the person calling in artillery has to give map references rather than just clicking on the map, and the gunner has to use the references to lay the gun, that’s two places where errors might occur.

      Just my sixpenn’orth.

i think it’s pretty balanced tbh, you need resources to keep using the artillery don’t forget – plus there are many effective counters, you only need one sniper squad to counter and they only need to be there some of the time

mortars would be a great addition and i’m pretty sure it’s been mentioned before that they’re on the roadmap – but I personally think the arty’s currently a necessary weapon and whilst it may be annoying to get taken out by it, it’s not overpowered – it’s not like it can singlehandedly stop a push from the enemy

It can get annoying, but I must say I kinda love it, it gives you the feeling of how terrible war can be. Powerful weapon :))
