What is Steel Division: Normandy 44

SD: N44 is a strategy game, where players have the command over a battlefield that are quite accurate in a historical perspective. Whether it’s the battle for St. Mère Eglise, the landing on Omaha Beach or defending the Pagasus Bridge, SD is all about tactic.

Before the game start, you can choose the intire division you want to go to war with. If you are on attack, you might be smart to get some artillery and quick tanks. If on defense, make sure to pick some AT’ers and hide them in the forest to ambush your enemy.

What make this game difficult, is the size of the battlefield, the many squads and the different weaknesses / strenghts of the units. Luckily there is the possibility to slow the game down, so you can buy some time to think about your next move.

      Is it any good?

The graphics are kinda cool: the zoom in and out is incredible! You can look at a single unit, or at the entire battlefield. That is amazing and gives some extra dimension to gameplay.

Every tree, hedge and building in the game, affects the gameplay. Units can not see beyond it, and thus not shoot an enemy that hides behind it.

The rangemeter is a really cool thing. Every unit has a certain range they can spot and shoot enemies. Some artillery pieces can shoot up to 2200 meter. It takes some action and risk to take the arty out, for no other unit can reach that far. It really gets frustrating when an AT-gun is shooting at your tank from 1200 meters, but your tank only has a reach of 800m. Argh!

Steel Division is a cool game, with a lot of options I have never seen before on a strategy game. But, the difficulty sometimes demotivate me to do another go.
