Most candidates taking the PSE Strata exam are confident in NAT. After all they have seen it before in other certifications or on the job. It is that confidence that is their undoing.
NAT in PAN-OS is not as you would expect from other vendor backgrounds. Even the expert will get confused about the order in which the firewall processes NAT policies against security policies.
Where the Real Confusion Begins
The firewall does NAT policy lookup before translating the security policy. This disconnection in the mind. Candidates tend to think that the NAT statement will be what the security policy will see, and so get their answer wrong for the ps strata exam.
There is a difference between the logic path of Source NAT and Destination NAT. Bidirectional NAT comes into play. In addition to zone based routing decisions and an implementation order of firewall-made routing decisions, the situation starts to get complicated quickly.
The other confusion factor is Interface based NAT and IP based NAT. If the candidate is using the steps that they have memorized, then they will not be able to correctly answer the scenario based pse strata test.
What the Exam really wants you to know.
The PSE Strata exam isn’t only about what NAT does. It provides realistic scenarios for deployment and requires you to think through them. You may be asked to identify the NAT rule in a particular topology and/or to explain why traffic is not being translated as anticipated.
Candidates who attempt to answer the pse strata questions in a rush without considering the pattern of the reasoning for each question lose the pattern altogether. The exam is designed to give credit to the student who has a grasp of NAT interactions with routing asymmetry and security zone design.
The only thing that sets passing candidates apart from the struggling ones is their dedication to their studies.
A common error is that a NAT rule that is enabled means a security policy rule is enabled. Many candidates fail to mention the post NAT zone which the security policy will be applied to.
A scenario based approach to practising pse strata pdf questions helps develop the pattern recognition skills the exam tests. Such resources as Pass4Success provide pse strata practice questions that mimic real decision points so that you will be able to pinpoint where you’re going wrong before test day.
The Path Forward
It does not mean that the PSE Strata exam is not well-prepared if there is NAT policy confusion. This is an indicator that the topic requires more thought than other candidates would have thought. You’ll see the NAT and security policy sequence working together with PAN-OS and your confidence will be transformed from presumed to earned.
